sustainable design
From the very start of Red Seed Studio, we have aimed at continuously reducing our environmental impact on our precious planet. While the very nature of our business (making 'things') means that we do have some impact, we decided that by making things in a sustainable and thoughtful manner would result in both beautiful design & environmental management.
The following are just a few of the things we do to reduce our impact:
- We use organic, sustainable or upcycled fabrics in as much of each product as possible.
- All our fabrics are hand screen printed using water soluble, solvent free printing inks.
- We minimise water usage in our printing process, using rain & creek water only. All water run off goes back onto our garden.
- Our collection is handcrafted by us, or local friends. We like the quality of something made by hand, as well as the thought and intention behind handcrafted items. It is important for us to remember the traditional crafts of our
ancestors, and pass them onto our children. As well as promoting fair
trade and respect across all nations and craftspeople.
- Our studio & family home is powered only by solar electricity. We sometimes need to use a generator for our woodworking & sewing machines, as our house is situated under a hill (meaning it doesn't get a full day's worth of sunlight on a cloudy or Winter day).
- As we live & work in the same location, we don't use daily transport; except to ride our bikes around the little country roads!
- We always only ever use recycled paper in all our office work; either pre or post-consumer paper, or other sources such as paper made from hemp, recycled cotton linters (from the textile industry), & other renewable resources. We reuse all our scrap paper (kids need lots of paper for endless drawings).
- All our postage & packing materials are reused where possible, or recyclable cardboard & biodegradable cello if new. We minimise all our packaging meaning less wastage of paper, lighter for postage costs & transport.
A little word about Slow Fashion.
Too many items in our daily lives are mass produced, with little or no integrity in their design process or end result. At Red Seed Studio we want to add texture, colour and warmth to your life, through meaningful design.
